SVG's Health Volunteering Programmes aim to help local health institutions that experience enormous constrains in human and material resources, by offering volunteering programmes for groups of doctors/nurses for short periods of time.
Most of our hospitals cannot offer the service of specialists; thus most patients are treated exclusively by internal medicine doctors, or referred to distant facilities, which in most cases means lack of further treatment. This programme aims at this gap, and requests therefore specialist in areas such as surgery, cardiology, gynaecology, urology, paediatrics, etc. Training of local health personnel -nurses, midwives,- is also a part of it.
As a professional doctor and/or nurse willing to volunteer in Ghana, you will need to provide us with documentation -copies of diplomas, etc.-that will allow us to register you with the Ghana Medical and Dental Association. This is a compulsory requirement from the Ghanaian Ministry of Health and it allows foreign health professionals to work in any ghanaian health insitution. Further information at Health Volunteering Programmes.
SVG would like to thank the team of volunteers formed by:
...who in 2006 volunteered at the Kwahu Government Hospital for two weeks. A 20 feet container with items donated by several Chicago hospitals was delivered, thanks to efforts of Dr Ted and Dr Mark and to the sponsorship of Children of Abraham, a Christian/Muslim organisation based in Indiana, US.
In March and April 2007, a team of Audiologists, Paediatrician,
OB/Gynaecologist, Internal Medicine doctors and nurses travelled to the
area to complete the work initiated in 2006; it provided training and
delivered a 40 feet container with items such as incubators, ultrasound
and EKG machines, furniture, clothing, computers, printers and fax machine,
medical books and a large number of other items.
In October 2008 a team of 11 doctors and nurses joined us and donated
equipment -microscopes, gurneys, wheelchairs and a long list of hospital
supplies. Two orphanages in the area received books, clothes and kitchen
appliances.
Dr. Mark Kevin has chronicled his 2006, 2007 and 2008 journeys to Ghana in his personal website.
The site contains amazing photographs of his journey and experiences, as well as Dr. Mark's very own blog.
